I was watching This
Morning last week and saw Kerry Harvey, sufferer of pancreatic cancer)
speaking about the controversial advert that is going around at the moment (http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/2014/02/06/pancreatic-cancer-campaign-envy-outrage-breast-testicular_n_4736451.html?utm_hp_ref=uk-cancer).
The main headline of the awareness campaign is “I wish I had breast cancer”
which has caused a lot of controversy and angry messages, including death
threats. However, I feel the reaction is a tad over the top. The advert is not
belittling the severity of breast cancer, it is merely pointing out that the
survival statistics are much better (http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/2014/02/10/i-wish-i-had-breast-cancer-pancreatic-death-threat-no-regret_n_4758479.html).
It’s a bit like me say that I am lucky to have Friedreich’s
Ataxia. I realise at first that comment sounds ridiculous, a bit like the
cancer statement. However, if you think about this, it makes logical sense.
There are loads of worse disabilities to have, cerebral palsy and muscular
dystrophy to name but a few. Also, in my opinion, being in a wheelchair is not
that bad. I believe not having senses, i.e. deaf or blind would be more
difficult to live with, but this might be argued against. Its difficult to
comment on these things as nobody has first hand experience of everything.
